Benevolence: Unlock Your Organization’s Potential Through Increased Engagement

In a disengaged workforce, cynicism thrives. Employees assume the worst of one another, question motives behind requests, and focus on negative narratives. In contrast, an engaged workforce fosters optimism, trust, and a willingness to forgive mistakes. As a leader, which of these environments would you prefer? More importantly, how do you shift from disengaged to engaged?

How Trust Impacts Employee Engagement – Benevolence

New hires often start with high levels of optimism and excitement. However, an organization’s history of how it treats employees plays a crucial role in shaping whether that optimism turns into sustained engagement or fades into disillusionment. Companies with a strong track record of benevolence—supporting employees, helping them succeed—instill a culture of trust and collaboration, which drives engagement. On the other hand, poor treatment or lack of support breeds cynicism, higher turnover, and an isolated workforce.

So, how do we move towards a more engaged environment?

It starts with creating a safe space for open conversations. Acknowledge that employees are critical to the organization’s success, and emphasize that your success as a leader depends on their knowledge, actions, and efforts. Make it clear that this is a shared venture, not just about organizational goals but also about supporting their personal aspirations.

Understand what’s in their best interest. You can’t assume to know this without including them in the conversation. Give them an opportunity to express their aspirations, performance goals, and development needs. Ask meaningful questions like, “What does success look like for you?” or “What would make this a great place to work for you?” and “Where do you see yourself in five years?”

Go first. It’s up to you as a leader to demonstrate a genuine effort to align with their best interests. For example, if an employee expresses a desire for promotion, take the initiative to outline the necessary skills and experience for that role, and help them identify opportunities to close those gaps. This transparent effort builds trust and shows your commitment to their growth.
